General Information
This section contains known issues for all platforms.
Home Button
The home button is the Real icon on the right hand side of the
Player main window.
The home button does not start your browser if you do not
have a browser started. If you do have a browser window already
displayed, then pressing the home button will change your current
web page to the RealPlayer home page at www.real.com.
Colors and Video
The RealPlayer may not be able to allocate colors in the color
map when there are many other desktop applications using a large
amount of colors. This results in random colors in the video.
The workaround is to exit other applications that are consuming
display colors. You will typically see this behavior when running
on an 8-bit display.
RealFlash
The RealPlayer for Unix does not play RealFlash files.
ClearVideo Video Files
The RealPlayer for Unix does not play files encoded with the
ClearVideo codec.
Image Maps
Image maps are not supported in the RealPlayer for Unix.
Preference File
The RealPlayer saves user preferences data in the file:
./prognet/RealPlayer50
If you were using the Beta version of RealPlayer 5.0, your
preference settings are not preserved. As a result, you will
have to reset your bandwidth and other settings using the
Preference dialog.
Menus Don't Respond
Pressing the shift key or if the NumLock or CapsLock keys
are on, will disable access to the RealPlayer menus. Turn off
these keys and the menus are accessible.
Fonts
The RealPlayer requires a font size of 10pt or less. The
default font is lucidasans-10. If this font is not available
on your system, you need to supply a new font by editing the
rvplayer.ad file in the rvplayer5.0 directory.
Note: There two places in the rvplayer.ad file that specify
the font. Make sure you change all occurrences.
Use the xlsfonts command to find the names of available fonts.
For example, enter this command:
xlsfonts | more
Select a font that is 10pt. The font size is the first number
in the series of numbers that is displayed per font.
For instance, this helvetica font is a good replacement for
lucidasans-10:
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--10-100-75-75-p-56-iso8859-1
After you edit the rvplayer.ad file, you need to load these
resources into the X server resource database using the
following command:
xrdb -merge rvplayer.ad
Start the Player to view the changed font.
Netscape is not running on your display
If you see the above message after you click on the Home Button or a menu
item in the Sites menu, it is because Netscape is not currently
executing. Start Netscape and then try these menu items and button.
"sh: rvplayer: command not found" message from Netscape
If you get the above message when clicking a RealPlayer link in
your Netscape browser, then it is most likely that the
rvplayer executable is not in your path. You need to
add the directory path of where the RealPlayer executable
is located. Or you could put the rvplayer
executable into a directory that is already in
your path. Some people may want to put the rvplayer executable
in /usr/local/bin. You need root permissions to do this.
See Path for instructions on setting your path.
Another reason why you could get the above message from
Netscape is if you change the name of the rvplayer executable
and you configure your browser to look for rvplayer.
See above information on Configuring Your Browser.
Playing Files
RealPlayer 5.0 plays RealAudio and RealMedia files. It does not
play .swf, .snd, .aiff, .au or .wav files. To convert an audio file
to the RealMedia format, use a RealAudio or RealVideo Encoder,
available from the RealNetworks' Web site at:
http://www.real.com.
